Why should we drink more water?
Why should we drink more water?
Dehydration is difficult for the body to cope with.
Over the course of every 24 hours we lose 3 litres of fluid – these 3 litres are accounted for through
· Exhalation
· hands and feet sweating
· urination
On every out-breath we exhale moisture [which we can see clearly on a frosty day – this much moisture is exhaled on every out-breath 24 hours of every day!!]
Hands and feet sweat constantly, socks are always damp when you take them off and hands will sweat noticeably if you hold someone’s hand or carry something in your hand for any significant length of time.
What happens to us if we don’t replace these 3 litres of fluid with water?
The body cannot survive without food and water. We can live up to forty days without food but since food contains some water, within 3 consecutive days without food and water we will die from acute dehydration.
If you eat well but you have a constant insufficient intake of water, the body will be forced to engage its ‘drought’ survival mechanism and every effort will be made to conserve water.
Signs and symptoms of chronic dehydration:
· Lack of sweat
· Dry and cracked lips
· Cold hands and feet
· Diffuse headache
· Poor elimination [constipation, spotty skin, chestiness]
· High blood pressure [heart speeds up to circulate less blood] OR
· Low blood pressure [heart slows down to circulate less blood]
· Cravings for salty snacks [to conserve water]
· Cravings for chocolate [low blood sugars]
· Some deterioration of eye sight [blood becomes excessively acid as it thickens damaging delicate organs it circulates through]
· Joint ache
· Candida and Thrush
· Poor digestion / bloating
· Loss of concentration
· Persistent ‘false’ hunger
· Fatigue
· Flaking skin on the abdomen and shins
· ‘bags’ under the eyes and extra wrinkles
What about Tea and Coffee, Juices, Flavoured water?
The body requires that the bulk of fluids lost be replaced with good clean water, ideally drunk at room temperature for optimum health benefit.
